So by now, you’ve all probably heard about the new kid on the block. Ibiza (which is literally a stone’s throw from Fur) opened last Friday (7/6/07) to the public, and it seemed like the ENTIRE public was there. The scene outside reminded party-goers of exclusive clubs found in Miami and LA, NOT Washington, D.C. Throbs of people. Men in black suits with earpieces trying to appear inconspicous. Mixed crowd of black and white folks, with Eurotrash sprinkled in for good measure. Here’s a few of the stand-out points from the night…..
Guest DJ AM was on the 1s and 2s (you’ve heard the name before, Nicole Ritchie’s ex-fiance and resident DJ @ Pure in Vegas), Kim Kardashian was the guest hostess..even though nobody I know saw her.
DJ AM did a pretty good job, mixing odd combinations such as Biggie & Guns and Roses. There were 2 other DJs, one of which played trance. Didn’t I say there was a mixed crowd?
As for the venue itself: There were several dancefloors, with scattered VIP areas. When you first walk in, there is a huge waiting area with beautiful sunken in couches. Past that is a main arena with 2 bars. If you’re lucky enough to make it up one of several staircases that you have to have a wristband for, you won’t be disappointed. There is a cabana with a live drummer alongside another DJ. More bars and VIP sections, with a much more laid back feeling. Did I mention the glass bottom floor? I’m sure there were some happy men downstairs that night.
The fire alarm went off on 3 seperate occasions. The partiers inside didn’t seem to care, but the angry firemen patrolling the outside did.
Hired acrobats. I don’t really need to say much about that. This is NOT your average hip-hop club. Effort was put forth.
All in all, it seems that Ibiza will hold a strong presence on the DC scene if it keeps this up. Hopefully by the time the club is in full swing, they’ll fix the scary looking Ibiza branded plates on the steps, paint the wall to the outside deck and replace that ONE mirror held up by tape in the women’s bathroom. Stay tuned for promoter information.
